Nettles in Portland are currently yea big. Actually this picture was taken on Monday in the Columbia River Gorge which runs a little cool so townie nettles may be larger. Don’t miss out this season! Get ‘em while they’re young!

ooh, yum- i’m craving nettles! last year i underestimated the amount i would need to gather to be able to eat them occasionally until this coming spring, so i’ve been out of ‘em for a while now. it will still be another two months or so until they are ready for harvesting where i am in the upper midwest.
Do you have any recommendations for a good California plant guide? I have ‘Edible and Useful Plants of California’ by Charlotte Bringle Clarke but didn’t really like it as it covered only a few species and didn’t have sketches or pictures for all the plants. I also have ‘A Survival Handbook to Sierra Flora’ by Weeden and it’s great, mostly because of the detailed abbreviated descriptions, illustrations and number of species covered, there’s nothing more frustrating than trying to identify a plant that isn’t included in your guide. Any help would be welcome.
Hi Walker, sorry I don’t know much about CA plants or plant guides. Michael Moore’s books Medicinal Plants of the Pacific West and Medicinal Plants of the Mountain West cover parts of California. I’ll see what they are using down at the Buckeye Gathering and let you know.
Thanks, I appreciate it.
